You have to have seen Fernandel on stage, or attended one of his concerts, to have any idea of the effect he had on his audience. From the moment he stepped on stage, he literally controlled the audience's laughter and applause. His great assets were his exceptional presence and unique physique; a voice that could range from the lowest notes of tragedy to the most unexpectedly high notes of the crooner; perfect diction, and great eloquence of movement and gesture... in short, an immense talent that none would deny.
  Fernandel made an astounding number of recordings, many of which have long been forgotten. A song like Francine, recorded in December 1939, is proof that a comedian can send out a courageous message on a serious matter, in troubled and dangerous times.
